Monster Energy/Thor/Leading Edge Kawasaki Wrap up Arenacross Season at Penticton

Hoyer and Sheren both take podium positions in the final points standings

Kamloops, B.C(March 17, 2010) The Leading Edge Kawasaki was back in action this past weekend as the final two rounds of the Nex-Trax Canadian Arenacross series took place at an all new venue, the South Okanogan Events Center in Penticton, British Columbia. As Leading Edge Motorsports is a BC Interior based dealership the round was as close to a hometown race as there is in the series so plenty of local fans were in attendance to cheer on the team.

Coming into the weekend,

WilliamsLake's Brock Hoyer was the teams main hope for the title as he sat in second place in both classes. Last years Open class champion, Hoyer put in a valiant effort with four straight podium finishes over the course of the weekend's action. Though he came up short for the title, his efforts rewarded him with second place overall in both classes.

The track at the South Okanogan Events Center

Coming in right behind Hoyer in the final standings was his teammate, Brady Sheren. The White Rock native started things off well with a second place during Friday night's MX2 main event. It looked like more of the same on Saturday for Sheren but unfortunately he fell while leading the Open class and while running second in MX2. Still, he regrouped to grab a pair of fourths for the night and third overall in the final standings.

So, who finished fourth in the championship? Why, it was again a Leading Edge rider as Kris Foster ensured the team would finish 2-3-4 when all was said and done. The Kamloops local scored a pair of fourths and a fifth over the weekend to ensure his spot at number four in the final standings.

Brock Hoyer finished second overall in the 2009-10 Nex-Trax Canadian Arenacross Series

That concludes the indoor season for the team as they now shift their focus and attention towards the 2010 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Nationals. The team is currently preparing and testing as they get ready to defend their MX2 title with defending champion, Teddy Maier, of

Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Monster Energy Weekend Wrap Up, March 12-14

Monster forms relationship with MERCEDES GP PETRONAS F1; Monster/Kawi’s Villopoto wins yet another SX main (Toronto) and Monster’s AMA Arenacross team sweep another podium

CORONA, Calif., (March 16, 2010) – In a major announcement, over the weekend Monster teamed up with MERCEDES GP PETRONAS for the 20-race 2010 Formula 1 World Championship Series.

Moreover, Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto chalked up another premier SX class win – his fifth of the year – in taking top honors at the Monster Supercross Series’ only international round held in Toronto.

Add to that a Monster sweep at AMA Arenacross and numerous titles from the season-opening amateur MX National in Lake Whitney, Texas, and it was yet another banner weekend for Monster athletes around the world of motorsports.

Monster signs MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula 1 team!

From Sports Marketing: As an integral part of Monster’s ongoing global push, Monster Energy will join MERCEDES GP PETRONAS as a Team Partner for the 2010 Formula One season starting from the first Grand Prix in Bahrain this weekend.

The glowing Monster Energy logo will feature prominently on the helmets of the team’s drivers, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, and on their silver racesuits, as the new Silver Arrows race cars compete around the globe during the 19-race Formula One season.

After winning 91 races and seven World Championships, Michael announced his retirement in 2006, before deciding to make his return to the sport with the new Mercedes-Benz works team. Nico, the son of 1982 Formula One World Champion Keke Rosberg, has 70 Grand Prix starts to his name and is considered to be one of brightest young stars of the sport and tipped by many to be a future World Champion.

Nico, Michael and their MGP W01 race cars will kick off the new season on Sunday 14 March at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Look out for the two Mercedes drivers and the bright green Monster Energy logo at the sharp end of the field!

Mark Hall, President of Monster Energy, said: “At Monster Energy we don’t hold back. Following our success with sponsoring the current Formula One World Champion Jenson Button in 2009, we’re delighted to have stepped up our involvement in the sport and joined with the current Constructors’ Champions MERCEDES GP PETRONAS. The team has such an exciting driver line-ups with seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher teaming up with emerging star Nico Rosberg and they will  undoubtedly deliver Monster’s “Go Big” message to the hundreds of millions of fans around the world that follow every race. The team’s competitive approach and commitment to achieving success is a perfect fit for Monster Energy as we continue to expand internationally.”

And from this weekend’s F1 GP opener in Bahrain …

The 60th anniversary of the Formula 1 World Championship Series began on Sunday afternoon at the 3.914-mile, 23-turn Bahrain International Circuit when the red lights extinguished themselves thus unleashing 24 1,340-pound, 800-horsepower cars to begin the 49-lap Grand Prix of Bahrain. Heading pell-mell into the first turn with filled to the brim fuel tanks of gasoline – in-race refueling has been banned for 2010 – it was German Sebastian Vettel leading the Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa out onto the blistering hot track (ambient air temperatures were in the 95-degree Fahrenheit range).MERCEDES GP PETRONAS driver Nico Rosberg was fourth, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was fifth and MERCEDES PETRONAS out-of-retirement wheelman Michael Schumacher was slotted in at sixth.

While a number of small incidents plagued the early laps of the race, the leaders calmly held station up at the front and began to steadily pull away, the top five all separated by approximately seven seconds. By the 10-lap mark of the race, the primary concern of each team’s engineers was how the cars were being affected by the burning of fuel (thus reducing weight) and tire wear. To that end, the word from the pit boxes was that the first pit stops would come at lap 15. And so it was as beginning on lap 16 lead pack drivers such as Hamilton, Schumacher, Alonso, Rosberg, Vettel, Alonso and others began to dive down pit lane to take on new tires. When it all sorted itself out and everyone cycled through their pit stops, it was a free for all for the lead, Hamilton pulling the first 2:00 minute lap of the race displaying how the cars were becoming faster and faster as the fuel was combusted. At the halfway mark, Vettel continued to lead, followed by Alonso, Massa, Hamilton, Rosberg and Schumacher, all of the drivers separated by somewhat healthy gaps of asphalt.

With 15 laps to go, the race took a dramatic turn as the engine in Vettel’s car began to make off-sound noises via a broken header and the two Ferrari’s of Alonso and Massa zapped him for the lead. Ultimately, Hamilton also passed Vettel as Rosberg and Schumacher also closed in on the wounded Red Bull car.

With just two laps remaining in the race, both Rosberg and Schumacher stalked Vettel, Rosberg keen to get around his fellow German. However, it was not to be. At the finish line stripe it was Alonso with a 14.5-second lead over teammate Massa. Hamilton wound up finishing third, while Vettel hung on for fourth, just ahead of Rosberg and Schumacher.

Added the sage veteran Schumacher: “After three years away, I'm happy to say that I had fun out there today, especially at the beginning with the good start that I had. I can live very well with sixth position and it gives both me and the team a good base to make progress. I have every confidence that we will improve the car. Working with the team for our first race together was very positive and the guys did a great job so I would like to thank them for their support in my comeback race. We all know that we have some way to go but we will get there. The season is long.”

Monster Energy AMA Supercross, Toronto

Running up north of the boarder for the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series’ lone international round, Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto made it two wins in a row – and five total wins this year – in the premier SX class at Toronto’s Rogers Centre, closing the gap between himself and SX points leader Ryan Dungey to 17 points after ten (of 17) rounds of supercross racing action.

In the support SX Lites class main event Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel suffered his first loss of the 2010 ESX season, though he still put his KX250F up on the podium (3rd) to keep his overall ESX points lead over former Monster-backed rider Austin Stroupe at seven points (95-88). Fourth place in the Toronto ESX Lites main went to Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson.

In the SX main Villopoto got out in 2nd place behind Trey Canard, then disposed of Canard on the second lap and led the rest of the 20-lap main through the checkers.

“I really wouldn’t be in this position without all of my team and everyone involved,” said Villopoto. “The last couple weeks we’ve been on it and it’s what we need to do. (The racing is) close and it’s been tough. I need to make up ground and I got to make those passes quick. I (also) need to keep getting good starts.”

Next up for the Monster Energy Supercross Series is this weekend’s Dallas round at the new 1.3 billion dollar Cowboys Stadium.

Monster Energy/Babbitt’s/TiLube/Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers and Josh Demuth, running 1-2, respectively, in the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series championship chase, traded victories this past weekend at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. When the dust and smoke cleared Bowers was still up in the overall standings, but by just 19 points with three races remaining in two cities (Dayton, Ohio and Denver).

Friday in Council Bluffs was all Bowers as the rookie AX racer won his ninth main event of the season – pulling the holeshot and leading the entire 25-lap contest. Bowers was joined on the podium by his Monster-backed teammate, Chad Johnson, in 2nd.

Demuth, who placed 4th on Friday, would settle the score on Saturday night in taking top honors in an exciting multiple-lead-change AX main that featured an All-Monster podium (Johnson 2nd, Bowers 3rd).

Monster European update …

Motocross/Off-Road

From Monster/Yamaha: David Philippaerts and Gautier Paulinagain sampled victory upon their works YZ450FM and YZ250FM machines, this time in the sand of Holland as the Italian and Frenchman won the MX1 and MX2 classes respectively in the first meeting of the national series at Mill.

After triumphant runs in the first two rounds of the Italian Championship both riders transferred their attentions to northern Europe and the sand as they continue to dial-in their new motorcycles ahead of the FIM World Championship on April 3rd/4th. Mill represented the last pre-season outing for the team.

“I am happy with this race and especially to beat riders like De Reuver and De Dycker here,” said Philippaerts. “We made some tests in the sand to find a good set-up during the week and everything worked well, so that is very good. The sand was not too deep and pretty hard underneath but it was still bumpy and rutty. I was pushing quite a bit to win as De Dycker kept close in the first moto and De Reuver was chasing me in the second. Overall this was a good way to end the pre-season and now we will think only about Bulgaria.”

Off-Road

Monster Energy’s Eastern European offices announced today the signing of Hungarian off-road rally great Balázs Szalay to the Monster Army. Szalay, pilot of the Opel/Dakar Team and joined by navigator László Bunkoczi, will begin the 2010 off-road rally competition season this weekend in Italy.

Consistently the top Hungarian finisher in the famous Dakar Rally, Szalay was actually Hungary’s first-ever participant in the Dakar Rally - contesting the event for the first time back in 1996. Since then he’s competed all over the world, racking up class victories at such legendary off-road proving grounds as Baja, Egypt and Central and Eastern Europe. His six Dakar Rally finishes are an all-time record for Hungarian drivers.

“Speaking on behalf of the entire Opel/Dakar team, we are very pleased to align ourselves with Monster Energy,” said Szalay. “Monster’s a highly sought after brand with the youth that follow off-road rally and we’re looking forward to not only delivering the brand to them, but also our sport’s more established audience around the globe.”

Managing the Monster Energy-backed Opel/Dakar program is Ottó Németh, whose marketing background has helped deliver industry giants Panasonic and Gillette to a team that also boasts a former Miss Hungary World in its ranks – team hostess Szilvia Freire.

The Monster Energy-backed Opel/Dakar team travels to Italy this week for the Italian Baja, March 18-21.

ECWP Rail Revealing Teaser from Teleprompted Anthems on Vimeo.

A while back, our buddy Chris Hopf from East Coast Wake Park gave us a call to let us know about a few of his plans for 2010. Apparently, the fine folks at Liquid Force had agreed to send up team rider and all around jib-ninja Kevin Henshaw to help Chris design and build a new rail for the park. Chris was being really secretive about it though, and apparently very few people know what he and Henshaw actually have in store for the park. So in true Greenville fashion, Chris decided to make a big ol’ party out of it and he decided to have a full-on demo day at the park to kick off the season proper-like.

So if you’re curious to see what East Coast Wake Park has in store for this year, be sure to head out there on Saturday March 13th. Not only will you be able to watch Henshaw tear the rails apart, but you can get out there and ride yourself. Plus, you’ll have the chance to try out all the 2010 Liquid Force boots and bindings, including the new Henshaw FLX. Chris was raving about this board at the Raleigh boat show and Nick even said that while they were in Florida last week, Chris insisted on sleeping with his board every night. Kind of weird, but I’m not here to judge. Whatever floats your boat, Chris.

Anyway, the whole thing kicks off next Saturday, March 13th at 10 AM for the big unveiling of the new rail. Be sure to get out there early so you can ohh and ahhh as they reveal the new contraption. Nick and I will be out there shooting so come give us a high five or something. And in the meantime, check out the teaser we did for the event. Get pumped: it’s almost springtime.

Monster Army:  Jake Weimer is becoming one of the best Lites motocross racers in the world.  After your wins last year in Supercross, Motocross and at the des Nations race in Italy, you are on fire.  Can you even put last year into a few sentences?Jake Weimer: It's hard to put into words but it was definitely a break through year for me.  I am very blessed and hope to continue all the things that are going my way at the moment.  This is something I always dreamed of as a kid and am now having the time of my life.

MA: This year you have started off the season the way every racers dreams of.  In six events you have won five of them and got second in the other one.  Why do you think you have been dominating?
Weimer: My success is 100% reflection of hard work.  I told myself that you get what you put into it.  I knew what my dream was and knew the hard work it would take to obtain all my goals.  Let me tell you, it is work but nothing beats standing on the podium and the feeling you get from your self investment.

MA: Describe your buddy the Dirt Shark.  And for those reading this, who might not know who he is, tell everyone about The Shark.
Weimer: The Shark is a good guy who I met when I was 17 and he hooked me up as an amateur.  Log on to TramsWorldMotocross.com and look up his videos. You will be glad you did.

MA: For a professional athlete, can you give the kids on this site some tips to becoming one of the best in their sport.
Weimer:  Hard work and never give up.  If you give yourself a shot then you can never have regret.  It is a long road to walk, but if you can make it to the end with some luck on your side, you will be glad you made the journey.

MA:  Where do you live and how do you train?
Weimer: I am from Idaho but spend most of my time in So Cal with the motocross industry. As far as training, I ride my motorcycle a lot as well as road bike a ton.  I also spend a little time in the gym.  I try and have a good balance between work and play for sure.  The last thing I want to do it burn out on all the work aspects of it.

MA:  Is winning X-Games one of your goals like your teammate Josh Hansen?
Weimer: It would be cool, but my goals are winning Supercross and Motocross titles first.  This is what I'm paid to do and I have to be responsible to my sponsors.  With that being said, don’t put any of your money on Josh and a 3-peat for that gold medal.

MA:  What do you send you money on?  What type of whip do you roll in?
Weimer: I roll in a Toyota Tundra on 26's.  Not the best car in the Inland Empire but it works for me.  I am doing better things with the money I am making and hope that it will last me a life time.  Now if you asked me what I would be rolling in if I were to just throw my money around my answer would be better here.

MA:  Do you have any pros that you look up to?
Weimer:  Not as much any more now that I race against them.  I need to look at the other riders in a different light or I will not be able to charge after them or ass them when I need to make it happen.  I need to keep them out of my Hero world for sure.

MA: In your opinion, how does an athlete become head strong?
Weimer:  I think every athlete is different but that is a very tough
Question.  For me it was just putting in time and getting used to the feeling of being up front and winning races. The more it happened for me, the more it becomes 2nd nature.  Now going into a race, I feel like I deserve the win.

MA:  Will motocross ever be in the Olympics?
Weimer:  I hope so.  We have something like that already with the Motocross of Nations race every year, but to have the label of “Olympic Sport” attached to motocross would be sweet.  The sport deserves it.

MA:  You have any other sponsors besides Monster Energy?
Weimer:  I have a whole grip of people behind me.  The major ones are Pro Circuit, Kawasaki, Troy Lee, Thor, Scott, Kicker, Ogio, Vans, and Maxima.  We have about 25 other also and they all be seen at www.procircuit.com

MA:  Motocross can be a long season with lots of training.  What do you
do for fun?
Weimer:  Relax ha-ha.  Seriously, there are times when all I want to do it sit and watch TV.  I seem to always be on the go and to empty my brain for a few hours is heaven to me.

MA:  Have you ever been asked for an autograph?
Weimer: A couple times.  Every time I am asked I feel blessed and know without the fans the sport is just a hobby.  If you see me, I was always make time for a fan!

MA:  You were part of the winning Motocross des Nations team last year.
How was that race in Italy with 90,000 fans cheering?
Weimer:  That was an unbelievable experience that I can not put into words.  Something I will always have with me no matter what happens.  No one ever warns you about something like that and the way it effects you.  I hope to again enjoy another time soon.

MA:  If you could make all your wishes come true, outline your next few
years?
Weimer:  Multiple championships.  Make the sponsors feel like I gave them their moneys worth.  To have the fans leave the event every time like I also gave them their monies worth.  I feel like I have been gifted something special and want o give back as much as possible.

MA:  Any parting words for aspiring athletes to one day achieve what
you have already?
Weimer:  Drink lots of Monster Energy.  That is when it all came together for me.  You did not hear this from me, but there seems to be something in the Assault flavor.  I know it taste a lot like Coke, but when I drink it I can feel it all the way down to my throttle hand!!  You’re welcome for that piece of secret advice.

Dirt Shark made his way to Hotlanta this weekend for Supercross and, yet again, he has hooked us up with another great behind-the-scenes video. Check it out…

Drayden Gardner

SPORT: Slopestyle
LOCATION: Big Bear Lake, CA

CHECK OUT HIS PROFILE

Monster Army: Drayden Gardner is becoming a well known name on the USASA amateur snowboard circuit.  So far this year you have won every contest and are 12 for 12 in competition.  Is your family going to have to buy a new house soon so you can store all those gold medals somewhere?

Drayden Gardner: Probably not a house… but at least a motorhome.
10 is my lucky number and I am 10 in 2010 so I think I am really lucky this year. I feel it. It’s my year to do good. But I pray before I take my runs too.

MA:  Give everyone a background on what type of competitions you have been doing this year and how competitive they are to amateur snowboarders.

Gardner: So far this season I have done the Volcom PB& J 15 and under at Bear mountain and got 2nd place, the Gatorade Free Flow 13 and under at Bear and got 3rd  place, and then all my USASA comps that are 10-11 and I am really happy with all my gold medals. So far I have done slopestyles, slaloms, and giant slaloms. I still have the half pipe and boarder cross left. My mom and dad just booked our room in Copper Mountain Co for the Nationals. I am really excited!

MA:  Describe yourself.

Gardner: I have long blonde hair and blue eyes. I am, I don’t know, like 4 feet something, and I am 10 years old in 4th grade. I get straight A’s in school. I like listening to music a lot. I am a snowboarder, skater, wakeboarder, and surfer. I’m a happy person and love hanging out with my family and friends. God is a huge part of my life. I always pray to be a better person.

MA:  For a snowboarder, you can not ask for a better place to grow up.  Talk about it.

Gardner: Big Bear is awesome! I love the snow we get every year. All the people who live here are really nice. I love living in the trees and by the lake. Bear Mountain has an awesome park! I love all the jibs everywhere! I am so lucky to be able to go there everyday! You can go to Bear and then over to Snow Summit or Summit and then over to Bear… I like to ride Summit at night with all the lights and stars.

MA:  Tell everyone about your father and what he does for a living.

Gardner: My dads name is Chase and he works at Bear. He helps with USASA too. He is my coach. He owns a heating and air company too called Patriot Bear Heating & Air. I love my dad.

MA:  How much do you get to ride in the winter?

Gardner: Every day if I can. Sometimes I get to go on independent study at school so I can train or travel for Nationals. I ride every weekend though for sure.

MA:  In summer, when the snow melts, what do you do to keep your skills sharp?

Gardner: I love skateboarding in the summer. I live next to a skate park so I just walk down there when I wake up and stay there pretty much all day. My mom and dad like to take me around to all the different skate parks in So Cal so I am pretty lucky. I am going to be competing in the CASL comps this summer. Should be fun. I would love to go to Windell’s this year! Tim Windell is really nice. I am going to use all the money I have been saving from scholarships through USASA and stuff to get there. I am going to Woodward in August. I can’t wait! It will be my first camp. I think it’s like a week long.

MA:  Do you have any pros that you look up to?

Gardner: I like a lot of the Bear Mountain pros. Chris Bradshaw, Scotty Vine, and Zak Hale kill it! Some other pros I like are Eero Etalla, Danny Kass, and Scotty Lago.

MA:  When are we going to see you in X-Games?

Gardner:  As soon as I can get in! I probably need to get a lot better and little older. I sure hope to get there though.

MA:  Do you ever day dream about competing in the Olympics?

Gardner: For sure! I can’t wait to see what the USA brings this year. I hope they win everything.

MA:  You have any other sponsors besides Monster Energy?

Gardner: Flow Snowboards, Sessions outer wear, NXTZ, and Banned Board Shop. I am so excited to be part of the Monster Army!

MA:  Is there anywhere you would like travel to and snowboard?

Gardner:  I would like to go to Alaska and ride there. Heli Boarding would be awesome! I am looking forward to going to the USASA Nationals this year at Copper Mountain in Colorado. Big Bear Lake is a Small Town.

MA:  Are there many other kids up there to help you push your skills to the next level?

Gardner: Yes. I have a bunch of older friends that help me. I like to ride with the Bear Pros and all of my friends. They push me to go bigger and try new things. The park staff makes perfect jumps for me to throw new tricks. My goals this year are to get my 540’s cleaner and to get 720’s. I landed one yesterday but it was sketch. I also want to get my spins out of the pipe higher.  USASA Nationals this year at Copper Mountain in Colorado.

MA:  Is there anything else you could ask for this year after all wins?

Gardner: I’m pretty happy with all my gold medals but I still have a long way to go. I still have two half pipe comps, boarder cross and another slopestyle. Then it’s all about Nationals. I got 9th in the Nation last year but my goal is to podium. I am really hoping to go to Woodward in CO too when I am there for Nationals in April.

MA:  If you could make all your wishes come true, outline your next few years?

Gardner: I would be on the podium at Nationals this year, and next and the next. And I would be on Dancing With the Stars because I have some really great moves.

MA:  Good luck and Monster Energy is stoked you are part of the army.  Any parting words?

Gardner:A unicorn with two horns is a duelicorn. ;-)
