ECWP Rail Revealing Teaser from Teleprompted Anthems on Vimeo.

A while back, our buddy Chris Hopf from East Coast Wake Park gave us a call to let us know about a few of his plans for 2010. Apparently, the fine folks at Liquid Force had agreed to send up team rider and all around jib-ninja Kevin Henshaw to help Chris design and build a new rail for the park. Chris was being really secretive about it though, and apparently very few people know what he and Henshaw actually have in store for the park. So in true Greenville fashion, Chris decided to make a big ol’ party out of it and he decided to have a full-on demo day at the park to kick off the season proper-like.

So if you’re curious to see what East Coast Wake Park has in store for this year, be sure to head out there on Saturday March 13th. Not only will you be able to watch Henshaw tear the rails apart, but you can get out there and ride yourself. Plus, you’ll have the chance to try out all the 2010 Liquid Force boots and bindings, including the new Henshaw FLX. Chris was raving about this board at the Raleigh boat show and Nick even said that while they were in Florida last week, Chris insisted on sleeping with his board every night. Kind of weird, but I’m not here to judge. Whatever floats your boat, Chris.

Anyway, the whole thing kicks off next Saturday, March 13th at 10 AM for the big unveiling of the new rail. Be sure to get out there early so you can ohh and ahhh as they reveal the new contraption. Nick and I will be out there shooting so come give us a high five or something. And in the meantime, check out the teaser we did for the event. Get pumped: it’s almost springtime.

Monster Army:  Jake Weimer is becoming one of the best Lites motocross racers in the world.  After your wins last year in Supercross, Motocross and at the des Nations race in Italy, you are on fire.  Can you even put last year into a few sentences?Jake Weimer: It's hard to put into words but it was definitely a break through year for me.  I am very blessed and hope to continue all the things that are going my way at the moment.  This is something I always dreamed of as a kid and am now having the time of my life.

MA: This year you have started off the season the way every racers dreams of.  In six events you have won five of them and got second in the other one.  Why do you think you have been dominating?
Weimer: My success is 100% reflection of hard work.  I told myself that you get what you put into it.  I knew what my dream was and knew the hard work it would take to obtain all my goals.  Let me tell you, it is work but nothing beats standing on the podium and the feeling you get from your self investment.

MA: Describe your buddy the Dirt Shark.  And for those reading this, who might not know who he is, tell everyone about The Shark.
Weimer: The Shark is a good guy who I met when I was 17 and he hooked me up as an amateur.  Log on to TramsWorldMotocross.com and look up his videos. You will be glad you did.

MA: For a professional athlete, can you give the kids on this site some tips to becoming one of the best in their sport.
Weimer:  Hard work and never give up.  If you give yourself a shot then you can never have regret.  It is a long road to walk, but if you can make it to the end with some luck on your side, you will be glad you made the journey.

MA:  Where do you live and how do you train?
Weimer: I am from Idaho but spend most of my time in So Cal with the motocross industry. As far as training, I ride my motorcycle a lot as well as road bike a ton.  I also spend a little time in the gym.  I try and have a good balance between work and play for sure.  The last thing I want to do it burn out on all the work aspects of it.

MA:  Is winning X-Games one of your goals like your teammate Josh Hansen?
Weimer: It would be cool, but my goals are winning Supercross and Motocross titles first.  This is what I'm paid to do and I have to be responsible to my sponsors.  With that being said, don’t put any of your money on Josh and a 3-peat for that gold medal.

MA:  What do you send you money on?  What type of whip do you roll in?
Weimer: I roll in a Toyota Tundra on 26's.  Not the best car in the Inland Empire but it works for me.  I am doing better things with the money I am making and hope that it will last me a life time.  Now if you asked me what I would be rolling in if I were to just throw my money around my answer would be better here.

MA:  Do you have any pros that you look up to?
Weimer:  Not as much any more now that I race against them.  I need to look at the other riders in a different light or I will not be able to charge after them or ass them when I need to make it happen.  I need to keep them out of my Hero world for sure.

MA: In your opinion, how does an athlete become head strong?
Weimer:  I think every athlete is different but that is a very tough
Question.  For me it was just putting in time and getting used to the feeling of being up front and winning races. The more it happened for me, the more it becomes 2nd nature.  Now going into a race, I feel like I deserve the win.

MA:  Will motocross ever be in the Olympics?
Weimer:  I hope so.  We have something like that already with the Motocross of Nations race every year, but to have the label of “Olympic Sport” attached to motocross would be sweet.  The sport deserves it.

MA:  You have any other sponsors besides Monster Energy?
Weimer:  I have a whole grip of people behind me.  The major ones are Pro Circuit, Kawasaki, Troy Lee, Thor, Scott, Kicker, Ogio, Vans, and Maxima.  We have about 25 other also and they all be seen at www.procircuit.com

MA:  Motocross can be a long season with lots of training.  What do you
do for fun?
Weimer:  Relax ha-ha.  Seriously, there are times when all I want to do it sit and watch TV.  I seem to always be on the go and to empty my brain for a few hours is heaven to me.

MA:  Have you ever been asked for an autograph?
Weimer: A couple times.  Every time I am asked I feel blessed and know without the fans the sport is just a hobby.  If you see me, I was always make time for a fan!

MA:  You were part of the winning Motocross des Nations team last year.
How was that race in Italy with 90,000 fans cheering?
Weimer:  That was an unbelievable experience that I can not put into words.  Something I will always have with me no matter what happens.  No one ever warns you about something like that and the way it effects you.  I hope to again enjoy another time soon.

MA:  If you could make all your wishes come true, outline your next few
years?
Weimer:  Multiple championships.  Make the sponsors feel like I gave them their moneys worth.  To have the fans leave the event every time like I also gave them their monies worth.  I feel like I have been gifted something special and want o give back as much as possible.

MA:  Any parting words for aspiring athletes to one day achieve what
you have already?
Weimer:  Drink lots of Monster Energy.  That is when it all came together for me.  You did not hear this from me, but there seems to be something in the Assault flavor.  I know it taste a lot like Coke, but when I drink it I can feel it all the way down to my throttle hand!!  You’re welcome for that piece of secret advice.

Dirt Shark made his way to Hotlanta this weekend for Supercross and, yet again, he has hooked us up with another great behind-the-scenes video. Check it out…

Drayden Gardner

SPORT: Slopestyle
LOCATION: Big Bear Lake, CA

CHECK OUT HIS PROFILE

Monster Army: Drayden Gardner is becoming a well known name on the USASA amateur snowboard circuit.  So far this year you have won every contest and are 12 for 12 in competition.  Is your family going to have to buy a new house soon so you can store all those gold medals somewhere?

Drayden Gardner: Probably not a house… but at least a motorhome.
10 is my lucky number and I am 10 in 2010 so I think I am really lucky this year. I feel it. It’s my year to do good. But I pray before I take my runs too.

MA:  Give everyone a background on what type of competitions you have been doing this year and how competitive they are to amateur snowboarders.

Gardner: So far this season I have done the Volcom PB& J 15 and under at Bear mountain and got 2nd place, the Gatorade Free Flow 13 and under at Bear and got 3rd  place, and then all my USASA comps that are 10-11 and I am really happy with all my gold medals. So far I have done slopestyles, slaloms, and giant slaloms. I still have the half pipe and boarder cross left. My mom and dad just booked our room in Copper Mountain Co for the Nationals. I am really excited!

MA:  Describe yourself.

Gardner: I have long blonde hair and blue eyes. I am, I don’t know, like 4 feet something, and I am 10 years old in 4th grade. I get straight A’s in school. I like listening to music a lot. I am a snowboarder, skater, wakeboarder, and surfer. I’m a happy person and love hanging out with my family and friends. God is a huge part of my life. I always pray to be a better person.

MA:  For a snowboarder, you can not ask for a better place to grow up.  Talk about it.

Gardner: Big Bear is awesome! I love the snow we get every year. All the people who live here are really nice. I love living in the trees and by the lake. Bear Mountain has an awesome park! I love all the jibs everywhere! I am so lucky to be able to go there everyday! You can go to Bear and then over to Snow Summit or Summit and then over to Bear… I like to ride Summit at night with all the lights and stars.

MA:  Tell everyone about your father and what he does for a living.

Gardner: My dads name is Chase and he works at Bear. He helps with USASA too. He is my coach. He owns a heating and air company too called Patriot Bear Heating & Air. I love my dad.

MA:  How much do you get to ride in the winter?

Gardner: Every day if I can. Sometimes I get to go on independent study at school so I can train or travel for Nationals. I ride every weekend though for sure.

MA:  In summer, when the snow melts, what do you do to keep your skills sharp?

Gardner: I love skateboarding in the summer. I live next to a skate park so I just walk down there when I wake up and stay there pretty much all day. My mom and dad like to take me around to all the different skate parks in So Cal so I am pretty lucky. I am going to be competing in the CASL comps this summer. Should be fun. I would love to go to Windell’s this year! Tim Windell is really nice. I am going to use all the money I have been saving from scholarships through USASA and stuff to get there. I am going to Woodward in August. I can’t wait! It will be my first camp. I think it’s like a week long.

MA:  Do you have any pros that you look up to?

Gardner: I like a lot of the Bear Mountain pros. Chris Bradshaw, Scotty Vine, and Zak Hale kill it! Some other pros I like are Eero Etalla, Danny Kass, and Scotty Lago.

MA:  When are we going to see you in X-Games?

Gardner:  As soon as I can get in! I probably need to get a lot better and little older. I sure hope to get there though.

MA:  Do you ever day dream about competing in the Olympics?

Gardner: For sure! I can’t wait to see what the USA brings this year. I hope they win everything.

MA:  You have any other sponsors besides Monster Energy?

Gardner: Flow Snowboards, Sessions outer wear, NXTZ, and Banned Board Shop. I am so excited to be part of the Monster Army!

MA:  Is there anywhere you would like travel to and snowboard?

Gardner:  I would like to go to Alaska and ride there. Heli Boarding would be awesome! I am looking forward to going to the USASA Nationals this year at Copper Mountain in Colorado. Big Bear Lake is a Small Town.

MA:  Are there many other kids up there to help you push your skills to the next level?

Gardner: Yes. I have a bunch of older friends that help me. I like to ride with the Bear Pros and all of my friends. They push me to go bigger and try new things. The park staff makes perfect jumps for me to throw new tricks. My goals this year are to get my 540’s cleaner and to get 720’s. I landed one yesterday but it was sketch. I also want to get my spins out of the pipe higher.  USASA Nationals this year at Copper Mountain in Colorado.

MA:  Is there anything else you could ask for this year after all wins?

Gardner: I’m pretty happy with all my gold medals but I still have a long way to go. I still have two half pipe comps, boarder cross and another slopestyle. Then it’s all about Nationals. I got 9th in the Nation last year but my goal is to podium. I am really hoping to go to Woodward in CO too when I am there for Nationals in April.

MA:  If you could make all your wishes come true, outline your next few years?

Gardner: I would be on the podium at Nationals this year, and next and the next. And I would be on Dancing With the Stars because I have some really great moves.

MA:  Good luck and Monster Energy is stoked you are part of the army.  Any parting words?

Gardner:A unicorn with two horns is a duelicorn. ;-)

Our main man Dirt Shark caught up with Pro Circuit’s Dean Wilson this week for a chat and lap. Check it out…

Villopoto wins third SX class main – tied for the o/a points lead - & Monster’s Pourcel tops ESX opener @ Indy; Monster’s Arenacross racers go 1-2-3 at San Antonio; Monster/Pro Circuit GPMX  team scores first podium

CORONA, Calif., (Feb. 23, 2010) – As the Monster Energy Supercross series moved east to Indianapolis, two Monster-backed riders took center stage in front of a packed house of nearly 63,000 motorsports fans at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium, sweeping top spots in both the SX (Ryan Villopoto) and ESX (Christophe Pourcel) Lites main events.

Monster Energy AMA Supercross, round seven, Indianapolis

Monster Supercross packed up and made the trek back over the Rockies this past week for what will be eight consecutive races east of the Mississippi, or the ESX portion of the series.

And things couldn’t have gotten off to a better start as Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Villopoto locked down his third premier SX class win of the season and pulled into a tie for the overall points lead with Ryan Dungey. RV accomplished the main event win by transferring out of the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) – a feat in and of itself being highly difficult.

“Going out of the last chance I had the outside gate,” said Villopoto, who failed to finish his heat race after a crash and had to qualify for the main event out of the LCQ. “I was second to last to line up (for the main event) and I really just can’t thank the guys at Monster Energy Kawasaki enough. It was the fastest bike out there and I was able to get a good holeshot.

“Starting on the outside there killed me,” he continued. “I was able to make something of it, which was awesome.”

Also running well in the SX class main was Monster/Kawasaki’s Nick Wey, who placed a solid 8th and moved into 8th place overall in the season standings.

The ESX Lites season opener couldn’t have gone any better for Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Pourcel. The defending ’09 ESX Lites champ – winning five of eight races last year – began his title defense with a convincing win at Indy.

“I just felt pretty good on my Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki,” said Pourcel. “Everything was ok today for me so I am just really happy to win the race tonight. The track was pretty tight tonight and I needed to win the race so coming into the main event I just gave my best (effort).”

Also doing well in his pro SX Lites debut was Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson. The rookie placed 6th in his heat race and 6th in the main.

Next up on the Monster Energy Supercross tour is this weekend’s (Feb. 27) round at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.

AMA Arenacross, San Antonio, Texas

The second half of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series kicked-off on Saturday night from the legendary Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. After yet another memorable night of bar-banging action, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki’s Josh Demuth, of North Richland Hills, Texas, raced to his second straight victory and third overall win of the season.

Points leader and Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki rider Tyler Bowers, of Danville, Ky., was the rider to beat on Saturday night, dominating the majority of the 25-lap AMA Arenacross class main event. However, as the race drew to a close, Demuth put forth one of the most impressive surges to close the gap on his teammate and steal the victory. With the win, Demuth gained another three points on Bowers in the season standings, reducing the deficit to 12 points with five rounds remaining. Bowers held on for second while fellow teammate Chad Johnson, of Rhinelander, Wis., helped give Babbitt’s its third podium sweep of the 2010 season.

This weekend has the AMA Arenacross tour stopping at Fresno’s (Calif.) Save Mart Center, Feb. 27.

Valence International Pre-Season MX, Falence, France

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s European MXGP effort got off to a podium start at the French tune-up race in Valence this past weekend. The Monster/CLS/Kawasaki/Pro Circuit team’s Steven Frossard placed 3rd overall at the event with teammate Jeremy Van Horebeek taking 8th.

Said Frossard: “My main aim this weekend was to test the bike in racing conditions, and I must say that the technicians have done a great job. The power comes in so strongly that I made a mess of the first two starts, in fact I hit the gate in race one, but I had got used to it in the Superfinal and was the first MX2 bike from the start. I made the fastest lap in the first two races and that gives me confidence for the World Championship.”

Also running well was Monster/Rinaldi/Yamaha’s David Philippaerts, who podiumed in the MX1 class at Valance.

Enduro Del Verano (Summer Enduro), Piramer, Argentina

Monster Energy/Factory Kawasaki's Ricky Dietrich arrived in Piramer, Argentina early this week to start his pre-week training and run for Argentina's largest annual Enduro Beach Race known as "Enduro Del Verano" (Summer Enduro).  This is by far one of the largest Enduro Beach races in the World and Dietrich podiumed here in 2009 and is looking to take the win for 2010.  Team Manager- Jason Smigel and Factory Kawasaki mechanic- Jeff Decker made the 6100 mile trip to assist Dietrich in taking home this Summer title.

"I love coming down here.  The people are awesome and the race is perfect.  I love to ride sand, so this fits me really well.  I'm looking forward to hooking it up this weekend for sure, said Dietrich on Wednesday. I can't thank Kawasaki of Argentina enough for bringing us down here to do this race and I'm really looking forward to honoring them with the trophy come this Sunday.”

Note: Dietrich would place 7th at the event.

Next up for Dietrich is round two of the WORCS series at Buffalo Bills Resort Casino on Feb. 28th.

Winter Olympics, Vancouver, B.C., Canada

Monster Energy athletes representing at the Vancouver (B.C., Canada) Winter Olympics have wrapped up their competitions. And though no medals were won (American BDX star Nate Holland was our best finisher, placing 4th), everyone represented their respective country very well and were pumped on the experience of competing in an Olympic Games.

In fact, Holland blew up across the national (and global) news pages when, in response to Canada’s plan to own the podium at the Vancouver Games, he said: “They (Canada) can take it home … we’re just going to rent it for a month.”

Things unfolded nicely with a Pro Open win for Team Monster Energy-Yamaha-OTSFF Racing’s Ian Hayden at the ISOC Amsoil® Snocross Championship Series Quick Draw Canadian Nationals in Sarnia, Ontario this past weekend. In addition to campaigning the Quick Draw National, which counts towards the CSRA Canadian National Championship, Hayden also rode Round 7 of the ISOC National Series. Despite some problems with his goggles, he still pulled a noteworthy top-10 finish out of his sleeve in that division.

“It was another banner weekend for us with Iain getting lots of track time and the resultant television exposure,” said team owner/manager Andre Laurin. “His win in the Quick Draw ISOC Canadian National and top 10 in the ISOC National put the icing on the cake.”
Thanks to the city of Sarnia, which trucked in tons of snow to Hiawatha Horsepark so the races could proceed as scheduled, the ISOC event offered up top-notch competition that saw American, European and Canadian riders vie for podium finishes at the US/Canadian border town.

In the Quick Draw Canadian National, which was Hayden’s main focus for the weekend, he again went head-to-head with defending Pro Open CSRA National champ Lee Butler. But whereas Butler managed to beat Hayden to the finish line at the previous event in Barrie, he was no match for Hayden in Sarnia and this time he was the one who had to settle for second place.

Hayden smoothly progressed through the qualifying races with a second place in the first heat and a win in the second heat. This gave him second gate pick on the starting line for the final. Knowing he had to keep Butler from a win if he was going to keep his lead in the CSRA National Championship Series, Hayden took off like a bat out of hell on his explosive Yamaha FX Nytro® to grab the holeshot and then lead wire to wire.

Although Butler mounted some challenges throughout the 20-lap race, he never really threatened Hayden for position. Still, Butler’s 1-1 qualifying heat results and the second place finish in the final gave him enough points on the weekend to tie Hayden for first place in the title hunt.

For snocross fans, the results in Sarnia have definitely set the stage for a thriller final round on April 10th at Horseshoe Valley in Barrie, where Hayden hopes to nail down his fourth Canadian National title.

In the ISOC National round, Hayden finished fifth in his first qualifying heat after a fairly routine race. In the second heat, which he holeshot, he experienced visibility problems due to a malfunction in his goggle tear-off system, caused by the roost of the rider in front of him. This liability saw him gradually drop back and finish the race in seventh place. Just missing qualifying for the final, he had to go to the LCQ in which he grabbed a third place at the checkered, and along with it a back row starting position for the final.

In the 20-lap final, incredibly Hayden was again hampered by visibility problems due to problems with the tear-offs. But he soldiered on to claw his way from the back of the 15-rider field to a ninth place finish when the checkered flag signalled the end of the race.

“Other than the tear-off problems it was a great weekend. As usual the team guys put a great sled under me and it ran like a dream. We went to Sarnia to win the Quick Draw Canadian National race and it was mission accomplished,” said Hayden. “It would have been nice to keep my lead in the points but we’ve known from the beginning of the season it was going to go down to the last round, because Lee wasn’t just going to hand me the title on a silver plate. He’s a champion, a worthy opponent and a great sled racer.”
