Monster Army: Haley Davis is becoming one of the best amateur female ATV racers in Indiana. Can you tell everyone why you think you are so successful racing?
Hayley Davis: Probably because I love the sport so much and I love the rush I get when I win. If you want something bad enough, you can make it happen.
MA: Do you even have a clue how many races you have won to date? Also what do you do with all those trophies? You think if you took them all apart and made one huge trophy that it could reach the moon?
Davis: Wow, I really couldn’t tell you how many I have won. It is easily in the 100’s. My dad installed a bunch of shelves in our garage and on them are just my 1st place trophies. The shelves are packed! I also have a bunch of boxes filled with plaques and trophies in our crawl space because we have no room for them. I have my number 1 plates and the trophies most dear to me, in my room.
MA: What is reason you always run the number 25? Davis: It was my dad’s number when he use to race motocross. So I guess I just wanted to carry on the family tradition by using it. It’s a pretty awesome number!.
MA: You seem to be very comfortable in air. Is jumping one of your favorite parts of riding? Davis: I love the feeling you get when you are in the air, but my favorite part of riding would have to be when I’m in a heated battle with someone. The rush you get from being put under that great pressure is just awesome!
MA: What do you have on the top of your helmet and why do you run it? Davis: Haha, I have ponytails on my helmets. It all started a few years ago. People always thought I was a boy out on the track. I guess they didn’t think a girl could ride that well. So my mom attached the ponytails to my helmet so that everyone would know that I WAS a girl. I’m starting to get a little old for the ponytails, but they are kind of my trademark so it will be hard to retire them.
MA: Does mud ever get stuck in your braces? Davis: Yes, I have had a mouth full of mud on several occasions! It doesn’t bother me though. A true motocross rider loves the mud!
MA: What is going on with the bright pink color? Davis: I want people to know I’m a girl. I think the girls need to stand out from the guys. What better way to do it than with pink!?
MA: Do you have any pros that you look up to? Davis: I would have to say James Stewart, Ryan Dungey and Matt Lemoine are my favorites! Not only because of their riding ability, but because they are so friendly to their fans. I have met all of them and I like that they take the time out to actually acknowledge you.
MA: I know you love music, what type do you listen to at the races? Davis: I like all kinds of music. At the track I like to listen to songs that pump me up!
MA: Will Female ATV racing ever be in the X-Games? Davis: Wow, that would be awesome! There is still a huge gap between the girls and guys in motocross, when it comes to being recognized. Hopefully that gap will close and the girls will be just as recognized as the guys are.
MA: You have any other sponsors besides Monster Energy? Davis: Yes, I am also sponsored by Spectro Oils, Scott USA, Elka Suspension, Hetrick Racing and Dreyer Honda. I am blessed to have them all.
MA: I know you went to the Indy Supercross this year. What was the best part for you? Davis: Yes I did! I go to the Indy Supercross every year. I love everything about it! I attended a supercross party the night before, where I got to meet the pros. It was so amazing to actually get to talk to them. I also love the opening ceremony. It gets me pumped up. But of course, the race itself is pretty amazing! I love cheering my favorite riders on. By the end of the night I had lost my voice from screaming so much!
MA: You know Dungy is the enemy of Monster Energy right? Davis: Haha, yes I know. He is an amazing rider and one of my favorites. I laughed when I took my picture with him. I was wearing Monster and he was wearing Rockstar! I’ll just have to persuade him into jumping over to the Monster Energy Team!
MA: You love animals. What type of animals do you think you could train to ride on your ATV during a race? Davis: Haha any animal would be great. I do have a special friend that always rides on my quad with me! It’s a tiny little troll. I put him on there for luck and he has brought me lots of it! I rub his hair before every race! People laugh, but I don’t care. He’s awesome!
MA: If you could make all your wishes come true, outline your next few years with racing? Davis: Haha if were to say it would be to win, win, win…I would be joking. I want to win based on my own ability, not based on a wish granted. I would most definitely wish for no break-downs, no wrecks and to have no bad sportsmanship directed towards me. I would also wish for the ability to race the whole national circuit. That is something I would really love to do. I think I would do really well. I would also wish to be an honorary Monster Girl at one of the Supercross races. I think it would be awesome to hold up the 30 second board for the pros!
MA: Give some girls some advice who might be reading this? Davis: I would tell them that if they really want to race, to just do it! It can be a little intimidating going up against guys, but you get use to it. I would also say not to go out there and expect to win. Experience takes time. Keep working at it and you will get better. You have the nerve to try things, but still know your limits. I have won 2 State and District Championships…that tells you that a girl can do great in a guys sport!
